Mortal Obligation Book One of The Dark Betrayal Trilogy Nichole Chase Books

Ree, an artistic slightly social outcast, is trying to live her life after the death of her brother. Her father throws himself to work while her mother kindly checked out mentally for a bit. For Ree normal isn't quite as reachable as she'd like. In love with her brothers best friend and seeing things that don't exist she has more trouble keeping things clear.

One night at a concert and things change drastically, not only for Ree but also for her circle of friends. Things get interesting when Paden and Ree are attacked by the things she had assumed to be in her head. Quite the shocker until Paden realized he now has fangs.

Taken by Sophie to a location Ree and the gang are finally told a story and get bits of information. Ree holds power she wasn't aware she held and it is up to her to save the world from the evil trying to take over. Her power will release the power within her friends and trigger a change in them that will help them protect her better. They are her Guardians. There is ONE, and only ONE that she must defeat in order to win. (of course he comes with an army but he is the one that must die) Regardless of the number, the possibility of her winning is slim without some training.

Roland, the bad boy trying to be good....one of the evil ones yet still able to be good. He struggles to be near Ree as he sees her as the one he lost, yet she isn't. It is up to him to take these teens and train them to properly guard.

The battle scene was epic, by far my fav part of the book. The ending had a huge twist that had my jaw dropping and my head spinning. Can't wait to read the next installment.

Mortal Obligation Book One of The Dark Betrayal Trilogy Nichole Chase Books Reviews

God must've realized how crappy my day was yesterday because he finally gifted me enough time to sit down and finish Nichole Chase's Mortal Obligation. This book was truly wonderful. The cast is big, but they are fleshed out and well written.

I love that Ree isn't your average high school girl. She's sort of awkward and shy. Mrs. Chase does this character a great honor by not allowing her personality quirks to disappear the moment she discovers she's "special."

Paden is a moral guy that is kind, warm, caring and good natured. His relationship with Ree is sweet. You feel for him through out the entire book, but you also empathize with Ree's frustration. Their relationship is real, honest and builds at exactly the right pace.

Roland. Enough said. He manages to steal every scene whether by accident or intention, and his presence in this book, in Ree's life, is undeniable. I am uber impressed at how ingrained his personality becamse with such an airy backstory. That is NOT a criticism on Mrs. Chase. In fact, quite the opposite. The way Roland is presented works for him. It woks so well that I'm totally Team Roland forever.

Bryce was another character that stuck out for me. I don't know. Maybe I'm a head case here, but he stole the show in the car scene. Don't get me wrong. Everybody else was present and accounted for, but until Roland was introduced I kind thought...huh...Bryce is a strong, bad ass character. He could be a second love interest for Ree. I know he had a girlfriend already and blah, blah, blah, (lol) but when a character has such overwhelming stage presence the reader automatically wonders hmm? What bigger role might he/she play? Good job, Mrs. Chase. Very good job.

Some other noteworthy events in this novel the twist. Didn't see it coming. Loved it. Also, the Tria issue took me by surprise too. The way the novel ended was spot one. It left my wanting more and needing to know what happens next. A few of my favorite scenes include the one where Roland is feeding from Sophie and Ree and Paden come in. Epic! Unfortunetly, it doesn't hold a candle to the following kitchen scene. I love that Roland got snarky enough to say what everybody else (i.e. the reader) was thinking.

Nichole, this book earns a solid five stars. Now, get that sequel done!
My Summary
Since her brother's death, seventeen year old Ree has had disturbing dreams and always feels like she is being watched. She doesn't understand what's happening. All she wants, is to get through high school. Then there is her brother's best friend Paden. He's promised to watch over Ree, but she wants more than friendship. She's loved him since she was a child. One night when they head out to a concert, Ree and Paden feel like they are being watched. Turns out, that the "people" watching her want to destroy Ree before she can save the world. She had no idea that she was the answer to protecting the world from darkness. Ree has guardians, who turn out to be her friends. Her guardians are the descendants of Gods. As she reveals the truth about her destiny, not only does she find her heart torn between two guys, but more surprises will be revealed.

My Take
I feel like it's been a while since I've read a vampire story. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I liked was that the vampires were different than other vamp stories. I also like that there is mythology tied into the story. There's also a bit of magic too. A well rounded mix, that brings the story together nicely in the end.

When I first met Ree, I felt a bit sad for her. Not only is she a bit of a loner at school, but her family is so distraught over her brother's death, that they kind forget about her. However, once she starts to learn the truth about who she is, she really steps up to the plate. There is nothing worse to me than a whiny heroine and thank goodness Ree handles all these changes with a kick butt attitude.

On to my favorite part of the story....PADEN. I'm the type of gal that focuses a lot on the boys in the book. Are you shocked? If I don't feel a connection to the lead guy right away, the story drags a bit for me. Luckily for me, I fell for Paden pretty much immediately. I mean, I got a little irritated with him from time to time with the whole, "I can't date you because, you are my friend's sister." deal, but he redeemed himself. I love that Paden is her main protector. He's so fiercely devoted to keeping Ree safe that it made me swoon more than once.

Now, there is another fellow, Roland, that enters the scene to make things a bit challenging for Paden. In fact, I think he pushed Paden into confessing his feelings for Ree, because he was jealous of Roland. I can see the benefit to having Roland in the story and there is definitely a strong connecting story between Roland and Ree, but I'm just not loving him. Paden is my choice, hands down.

As for the story, I admit, the flow was smooth, but I kept waiting for "the" moment that I would be wowed. I felt the connection to the characters, but I needed that special something to make me love the story. The first moment came when you begin to understand the possible connection between Ree and Roland. It should definitely make for an interesting twist as the story continues. The second moment for me came at the end. What a great ending! I admit that I had some suspicion about what happened, but once it happened, I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next.

My final thoughts are the writing was great, I connected to the characters, and I look forward to the next book in the trilogy, Mortal Defiance. I feel like this is a great read for the YA community. If you are looking for a good mix of paranormal characters with a twist, this is a great pick for you. I really look forward to reading Mortal Defiance. I can't wait to see what happens next!
