I Worked as a Summer Camp Counsellor in America - This is My Story

Diary of a Summer Camp Counsellor is an account of my time working as a Summer Camp Counsellor at a Camp just outside New York, USA.

This was the journal that I kept during that time and I thought that it would be fun for people to read.

People who may be interested in this little book include those who are thinking about working at a camp and those who have worked at a camp.

These are my memories of that time. There are some really good memories but also a lot of terrible times are shared here. If you have worked at any sort of summer camp, you might be able to relate to some of the things mentioned within.

PLEASE NOTE - This book contains swear words so if you are offended by bad language, please DO NOT download this.

This books contains a little over 16,000 words.

Happy Reading.

Diary of a Summer Camp Counsellor Working at an American Summer Camp eBook Victoria Virgo

The author was a young university graduate when she decided to take a few months leave to travel in the U.S. A camp counselor job got her a visa and earned spending money. Of course, it meant she had to spend almost two months working with over-indulged youngsters at a "rich kid's camp." Coming from a more disciplined English background, it was an eye-opener for her and may be for the reader. Things have certainly changed since I went to Girl Scout camp! The stories of her experiences (good and bad) with campers, counselors, management, and locals are quirky and amusing.

After camp, she toured the Eastern half of the U.S., including New York, New Orleans, Miami, and Washington DC. She traveled with other UK students, and they did the type of low-budget, out-all-night-back-up-at-dawn travel that would kill anyone over the age of forty. As a lovely young Black woman with a British accent, she attracted lots of attention. I LOVED her story of touring the Louisiana plantation with a group of middle-aged white Americans. Wonder what they thought of her?

This woman has a lively intelligence and a delightful sense of humor and her observations of America and Americans are entertaining and thought-provoking. I'm glad she saved her diary from her epic trip. It's fun to look back with her.

This little ebook was a quick read, because I couldn't put it down! It is basically a journal of the author's honest experience working as a summer camp counselor in New York. She's from London, so the culture shock is pretty amusing.

I love her frank, funny descriptions of the camp and her subsequent tour of America with other Brits. If you don't mind a few swear words, and you like a giggle, get this, it won't disappoint.
First half of book highlighting summer camp was my favorite. Even tho Victoria and fellow co-workers were of a like mind that "any chance to leave for an hour or two and we make sure to take it" so as to escape the "little ladies (that) are straight out of the movie "Mean Girls" didn't sway me from knowing it was still a very worthwhile experience overall for everyone involved. From the Lol funny moments like the Miss World/ Miss Universe contest substituting guys for ladies to the more touching moments of getting hugs from half the girls and watching the flickering (candle) lights flow away in the darkness at the conclusion of camp all made for a memorable read. Editing issues aside, I even found the occasional miscues in the second half funny as well, my favorite being "the Chicago Cubs play the San Francisco Bulls" (author had to have meant the Giants not the Chicago Bulls, but I would be greatly amused if ever the Cubs did play the Bulls one day). Good book and I'm glad that the author eventually mentioned the girls not being so bad after all.
