I’m reading this series out of order, last one first, (not on purpose) but that’s okay. This is one of those books that makes you feel what’s happening. In my mind that’s what you want, to be inside the story. The characters become part of your life.
I thought that I might have to take a break from the drama, but I find after reaching the end of the book, I need to go on to the next to see what happens.
I’d recommend the whole set, once you start, you’ll be hooked.

This is not a complete story. It is only the beginning to her journey. I should've realized when the story started and it mentions the main characters age. As I was hoping a jump in the timeline it never occurred. Must read additional books in series to obtain the end I imagine. I only read the first and will not be continuing.

With that said the characters are well developed and the writing style of the author is good.
This book was far from boring with plot twists, real characters and embarrassing moments streaked through the text. My favorite part was budding romance between our main character and Michael. There was great imagery and Indian stories as well as other down-sided problems. With a unimaginable ending,this book calls for you too read the next ones. The only problem I seen was the fact that it was repetitive in parts and didn't use a aptitude of words.
The depression era comes alive as you read this coming-of-age story set in the deep South. Ms Hollinghead transports you into the heart and home of 14-year-old Sarah Jane, who lives on a farm with her family - her little brother, a wonderful father who you’ll fall in love with, and a mentally unstable mother.

When tragedy strikes, life becomes even more difficult for this young girl. How can anything good come from the ashes of her shattered life? But hope springs from the most unexpected sources. What a sweet ending to a great story. Looking forward to reading more In the Shadow of the Cedar stories.
Not exactly a cliffhanger. If I don't get to read the other books, this one came to a satisfactory conclusion, in my opinion. Of course there are plenty of additional stories in the life of "Blue Jay" that can be told by this superb writer. Expertly edited for smooth reading without distractions and that is quite an accomplishment for a version. Pleanty of review that articulate the plot. Real pageturner, robbed me of my sleep!

I love how Sheila Hollinghead crafted this story, from the first page it will pull you in and won't let you go until the end. There is something truly amazing about a story when it causes you to search the scriptures, pulls on all your emotions and keeps you excited about all the main characters.
This was a historical novel that I enjoyed reading. Starting with the arrival at Ellis Island and ending with the establishment of a family in the midwest on a farm. The family was quite lucky and didn't seem to have the usual mishaps of pioneer families at that time and also seemed to have quite a lot of money to spend along the way which was also quite unusual for the times. They did have the usual issues with sickness and weather conditions however making this a good read. I would enjoy following this family to the next generation if the author would attempt it.
This is one of those stories that you never want to end. Sarah Jane is a character that grabs your heart. I was transported back to a time of hardship, where the basics of life were much more about family and love. Not about possessions. I really loved the old sayings, remained me of when language was used to describe silly things instead of the four letter words used today. I truly love when God is the focal point of your life, what He wills instead of what we will.
Very very good book. I will be reading everything of this author!
