The Skylighter The Keepers' Chronicles Becky Wallace Books
While it's only been out for 3 years, I feel like it's been ages since I've read from Becky Wallace's The Keepers' Chronicles! The Skylighter has been sitting in my pile for 2 years, so 200+ books ago I last read The Storyspinner and naturally, there was no recap to be found, so I just dove in head first with very little recollection of what went on. This seems to be a growing trend for me lately, must be old age, lol! But as I tend to do, I just get through it as best as I can and enjoy it for the story it is.I can't remember where we last left things but basically what you know at the beginning of this book, war is coming. Johanna is struggling to accept her new identity and yet still remain true to herself and the heritage she grew up with as her own. She and Rafi are struggling to find the rest of their friends whom they got separated from after the events of last time. After that they need to find a way to repair the magical barrier that divides the kingdoms.
Meanwhile we have Sapro gunning for the throne to rule over everyone. Basically, bad guys trying to take over and be the all mighty and powerful deity that rules all! As before we have a cast of characters that share in the storytelling. Characters like Johanna, Rafi, Dom, Jacare, Pira, and Leao are the ones with the most page time. Though, naturally, we pretty much just stick with Johanna, Rafi, and Dom.
In all honesty, I am struggling to recant most of the storyline, as I felt like it was definitely continuing things from the first book that I can't remember worth a darn. At the same time though, I did enjoy what I read. We basically have bad guys trying to take over the kingdom and the good guys trying to stop them. There was pain and heartache for several of the characters and not everyone got their happy ending. Though I was quite pleased with how things ended. Sure there was heartache, but for the most part, I truly enjoy it.
Throughout the book we had Rafi and Johanna fighting to be together. Johanna isn't sure she wants what Rafi wants and that will naturally put them on opposite sides of life. The old standard of wanting to be together yet circumstances are constantly fighting to keep them apart! And then there's Pira and Leao who have that new tender relationship that barely had a chance to start before Pira finds herself a prisoner of the enemy. And then there was Dom. He was fighting his own game of romance between two different girls...which the results of that "love triangle" were quite shocking.
There was still a decent bit of mystery going on as well, as Maribelle is a spy of sorts working among Dom's castle trying to sniff out a spy. She has her own game plan going on that may or may not interfere with Dom's. There was a lot going on, quite a bit of intrigue you could say. It was always engaging too. One thing I love about multiple points of view told through chapters is when each chapter seems to end with a cliffhanger for that person and then you're dying to get back to them, only to go onto another person and basically start the cycle all over again! It's maddening, yet really really fun too!
All in all, I wish I would've waited to binge read this duology (as well as a few others I am struggling to find time for). It's truly the best way to go about things with duologies. I still enjoyed The Skylighter though. There was a great deal of fighting destiny and desires, yet in the end...well, I'll leave that as a surprise for you all if you've yet to read this one! It's a fun duology filled with magic and just the right elements of The Sleeping Beauty, as I glimpsed just a few more threads of the beloved fairy tale woven into this story. I hope that one Becky Wallace will return to fantasy reads as she writes a very magical story here.

The Skylighter The Keepers' Chronicles Becky Wallace Books Reviews
First, it's important to know that this is the second book in a two book series and you must read the first book, Storyspinner in order to understand this book.
I liked the first book, and although I was annoyed that Wallace gave us a cliff hanger ending in the first book, the resolution of the story in The Skylighter redeems the offense.
First the one complaint I have about the book. The book is written from multiple points of view with the story telling skipping from character to character. I'm not a huge fan of that technique. It's a little like listening to a CD that skips. You can enjoy the song, but it's not as good as if the skip didn't occur.
However, Wallace handled the changing points of view very well. The story moved smoothly in spite of the inevitably jerk you feel as a reader when the point of view skips to a new character.
This book had everything a story needs to be satisfying. It had character growth, peril, conflict, resolution, self sacrifice, well rounded characters, villainous villains.
And, the ending was fantastic. Absolutely epically fantastic.
THE STORYSPINNER was one of my favorite reads of 2015 so when I got approved to read THE SKYLIGHTER early on Edelweiss, this was one I didn’t hesitate to pick up right away!! Becky Wallace has this amazing way of crafting characters to really connect the reader to each one and also create this incredible bond between them all. One thing I always love and enjoy in a book is a cast of characters that really comes together to form a crew (like in The Lunar Chronicles, The Lies of Locke Lamora, and Six of Crows) so to see how each of these characters already were tied together or became wrapped up in each other was just fantastic.
I’ll admit that I probably could have done with a re-read of THE STORYSPINNER before starting THE SKYLIGHTER. There’s just so much that happens and it really was almost a year since I had read it and I could have used some brushing up. There’s still plenty more to be seen in THE SKYLIGHTER though! It was actually hard for me to come to grips with the fact that the series was already ending! I’m so used to trilogies that it felt so fast to come to a conclusion already and yet it was the perfect amount of content for this story. I always enjoy duologies because you get so much more to a story and yet the series also wraps up quickly so readers aren’t waiting forever for that next book. I did feel a bit lost at times simply because I just didn’t remember everything that happened in book one (and totally major plot points too. Oops. My reading retention is the WORST) so there were moments that I wasn’t as hooked as I had been with THE STORYSPINNER because I was missing those pieces of information that should have already been stored in my brain. That was definitely reader error there.
As always, Becky Wallace’s character relationships are to die for. I absolutely adore every single one, romantic, platonic, or familial. They’re all so intricate and really provoked so many emotions as I was reading. The budding romance between Johanna and Rafi is absolutely stellar, filled with plenty of tension and some amazing kisses! And the range of romances is wonderful as well. There are many different levels and forms of love in this book and it was so wonderful to witness them all. I also really just adore this crew and their friendship. It’s not always easy but they really come to rely on one another and their feelings go way past the surface level.
I’m also still totally in love with this incredibly intricate world and how much it comes alive as I was reading. I could easily picture every location and it really helped me put myself in the story. The magical aspects of the world really develop in THE SKYLIGHTER as well although since it was the title of the book, I did find myself wanting a bit more focus on skylighters!
I just love Becky Wallace’s books and whatever she writes next will be an auto-buy for me. This is such a fun fantasy duology and if you haven’t read these books yet, now’s the perfect time to read them back-to-back and really savor the whole experience!
