A Southern Girl Story River Books John Warley Therese Anne Fowler Books

This is a novel that explores the adoption of a Korean orphan into a truly rigid, conservative society in the south. That the city is Charleston appealed to me as I live there and understand probably more than the average reader the mores and mentality of its oldest inhabitants, those that live "South of Broad". The author did a good job of developing his characters over the course of the book and there were certainly some unexpected turns along the way. The book was well written. My one exception was the author's inclination to wax on elaborately describing some detail seemingly only to fulfill a frustrated attempt to showcase his talents as a writer of more serious fiction. Those passages seemed out of context at times, interjected when you least expected (or wanted) them. Fortunately they didn't detract too much and were easy to skim over at times. All in all, a good read that sends some very nice messages when all is said and done

A Southern Girl Story River Books John Warley Therese Anne Fowler Books Reviews

My rating on this book went up and down as I read. At certain parts I thought it was taking off only to see my interest lag. I thought the book had a good idea for a story and the beginning showed a lot of promise as the story progressed through the voices of the different characters involved in the adoption. But there were so many "side stories" that I soon became rather disinterested. And really? The story of the "southern girl" took a backseat to the quest to maintain status quo amongst the privileged class, boat people of Vietnam Nam, college trip to Mexico, and on and on. I wanted to like it. Honestly I did try...finished it although several times I wanted to stop. And probably I should have.
John Warley writes an incredible book that is a tale of an old southern aristocrat displaying the finer characteristics and knowledge that the south is changing, true men have real ethics, and it is right and just to champion causes that should be the past. This is a story of family, its importance in our lives, some of the whys and wherefores of the origin of prejudice, the lengths parents will go to in order to champion their child's rights, even if the child is an adopted child. Incredible characters, a mesmerizing book of fiction with underlying truths. I highly commend the author. Great read, Okie Reading Specialist
I took this book with me to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina and finished it in two days. It might have made me a little anti-social but the story was so engaging and the book was so well-written that it was worth it. For those who have lived in the South, you will recognize many of the characters and attitudes. If you have not had the pleasure of spending time in the South, this books serves as a unique introduction. I hoghly recommend this book!
The first third of the book is consumed by the question of; will they or won’t they adopt? Well, obviously they will or there goes the rest of the book. Okay. So they adopt and suddenly 18 years go by, the mother dies, and now the be all and end all is an invitation-only party. I would have been more interested in the middle years when the adopted Korean daughter is growing up and finding her way. The author makes a big deal of this being in Charleston, which, indeed, may be one of our nation’s most tradition-bound cities. However, I think this could have happened anywhere. The story might have been more powerful if it had been set in a northern city with a (possibly undeserved) reputation for tolerance.
A Southern Girl turned out to be much better than I had hoped. The blurb made it sound like a chick book, but it was really a beautifully crafted story about a reluctant father who slowly turned into the father of the millennium.

Having read several Pat Conroy books, I so enjoyed Warley’s descriptions of Charleston; descriptions of architecture, attitude, food, landscapes and a deep-rooted, but somehow well-intended exclusionary approach to life. Even powerfully left-minded readers will enjoy reading this book.
A Southern Girl by John Warley is a book you won't be able to put down and walk away from for a day, or even a few hours. The author so successfully, and completely, develops the characters you'll find yourself unable to stop thinking about what their decisions and choices are going to be in future pages. The main characters are quite often faulty (I mean, they ARE humans), caring, and thought-filled folks. The author's composition, choice of words, and sentence structure create the rhythm and melodic sound of a symphony, much like Kenneth Grahame's classical novel The Wind in the Willows. You will often find yourself feeling like you are eavesdropping on some of the most personal thoughts of the characters, which you are, and you will likely, just as I did, experience many emotions towards the main characters, and some of the more minor ones - affection, frustration, anger, patience, and I even felt the need to speak to them, even if all I could say was, "WHAT are you thinking?" The beauty of this author's style and purpose is that he never failed to have the character(s) answer my silent questions of them. There is a pace here, a purposeful, heart rendering road trip that, as you read, causes you to feel so strongly alive, and full of hope, you don't care WHERE the trip is going to end up. You'll simply enjoy what turns out to be an unforgettable ride!
