I was skeptical at first - I'm not generally a fan of alphole heroes, and you don't get much more alphole than Bastian Stark. Drunk, disorderly, misogynistic, antisocial. Yeah, didn't like him at all at first. But that's the idea. You can't make a good redemption story unless your character seems utterly unredeemable. Plus, if Shay Savage can make me fall in love with a non-verbal caveman like she did in "Transcendence," she gets the benefit of the doubt.
Oh, it takes some pretty drastic action to peel back the layers of Bastion to reveal the decent man inside (deep, deep inside), something along the lines of a shipwreck, an unexpected bit of humanity/heroism in the form of his rescue of Raine, near death from dehydration/starvation, but the set up is perfect for revealing Bastion's tragic backstory and humanizing him. Raine has the patience of a saint, but as her life depends upon Bastion's hard-won survival skills, she sort of has to. Then again, she doesn't take his crap and calls him out when he uses his alphole tendencies to prevent her from seeing his soft underbelly.
This read totally satisfied my craving for angst/wounded heroes, and I'll definitely grab the next book in the series!

Surviving Raine Surviving Raine Book 1 edition by Shay Savage Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love stories that deal with being shipwrecked. It is a very interesting topic, which I hope to never experience. Getting that out of the way. Surviving Raine is about a 29 year old man, Sebastian "Bastian" Stark and 20 year old Raine Gayle.
Bastian is the owner and captain of The Oblivation, he lives there and drives people around on a cruise. Bastian smokes, drinks, has sex with a prostitute or anything and then goes to sleep, same routine everyday.
Until one stormy night and the ship suddenly is sinking and people are scrambling around and trying to get out. Bastian still coming back from a hangover is trying to find his friends John Paul and Alejandro. He leaves the ship and gets on a small lifeboat.
He suddenly sees Raine and woman he doesn't know and resuscitates her back to life. This all happens in the first chapter.
I really loved the dynamic between Bastian and Raine, they are both very opposite from each other. Bastian is mean, angry, closed off and snappy. Raine is sweet, caring, and always helping others. So you see how there will be a lot of conflict.
Including that Bastian is going to detoxing from not having alcohol in his system.
Bastian and Raine are trying to survive on the little water and food and trying to find land to get back home. Wherever that is for Bastian.
As Raine is learning more and more about Bastian you learn that he has had a very, incredibly, difficult, and sad childhood. I am not going to say anything about it, in fear of spoiling it. But it's pretty messed up.
It was really hard to see what Bastian not only what he had to go through as a child but as a man. And Raine did have her fair share of hard times as well. Bastian and Raine are really a good couple and compliment each other very well.
Although, there were times when I was annoyed with the way Bastian acted and always was on the defense whenever he talked to Raine. But I felt that it also brought them closer and to heal the demons that they had within themselves.
And they were the only people they could talk to. So it's only Raine and Bastian all the time. So of course there was going to be love, hate, confusion, and sadness.
A really amazing story that leaves you satisfied but you know you want more of the caring Raine and the storm that is Bastian.
This book was so flipping AWESOME!!!!! Bastian is a guy who drinks and has sex and hates him self and everyone in the world. He has gone through A LOT in life that most people would have died from. Raine is a soft, sweet, young woman that does the impossible and loves Bastian despite himself. She has had her troubles but she is the calm to Bastian's storm. She continually compares him to a pitbull that she rescued and it pisses Bastian off. This is so cute to me!! Bastian's biggest hurdle is himself!!!! I fell in love with these two and I wanted them to STAY lost forever!!!!! I won't give it away but you have to trust me that this hardheaded guy and all his caveman ways will have you falling in sweet love with him!!! There is truly adventure, suspense, nasty talk, lots of beach sex, romance, poetry, redemption and an underlying lesson that someone truly loves you No matter what!!!!! This has been an AWESOME read and I cannot wait to read the next book!!!! I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LOVED that it was told from Bastian's point of VIEW and did not have a lot of girlie inner monologue!!! I can identify with his self hatred and thinking that he can NOT be good enough for Raine. He thanks God for whatever happened that he got HIS Raine. This all makes this story so REAL and believable!!! This book was so refreshing and needed!! You have to, have to, have to read this!!! I'm telling you that you will NOT regret it!! I am so in love with this book!!!! Can you tell? #needmesomebastian
