The Journal of Mortifying Moments A Novel Robyn Harding 9780345476272 Books

This book made me laugh out loud so hard in a Chick fil a I nearly snorted a nugget. From haters at work to a group of friends you have to treat with kid gloves (each group seems to have a spaz, a workaholic, a party girl, the quiet one and the freak/crazy one and sometimes combos of) this book shows all the elements of a 30 something trying to be together gal who really is kinda clueless- like many of us. Then the crazy mom and dad issues, siblings wow yah they have it together NOT! Still wish the main character had launched her singing career via karaoke. At least once. Would have been epic at work. Living vicariously. Then the boyfriends. Seriously, this chic dated all my exs. So glad to know I'm not the only one who daydreams as an adult. And not about the laundry. But she got it wrong with the icing. Gotta do the dark chocolate fudge with chocolate sprinkles. Love that she improves herself although that is a bit of a comedy in itself. Another reflection there. You gotta read this for a pick up or if you are taking life too seriously or just cause it's life for a female in your 30s!!!. Love this book all the love connections and fails and mess ups it's really....
....
So, author, seriously, who stole my diary?

The Journal of Mortifying Moments A Novel Robyn Harding 9780345476272 Books Reviews

Lots of fun and learning!
Hysterical! That's all I can say- HYSTERICAL!
Excellent writing style. Good story. Boy, how I could relate to the main character's mortifying moments and everyday life!

Recommended? Yes
This author has a way with words that immediately grabs your attention. The main character had me laughing with recognition of mortifying memories and regrettable decisions. She is able to come to peace with herself and her life as the story ends. I will be looking for other books by this author.
Refreshing and funny read. I loved the author's voice. I felt as if I was best friends with the narrator and she was telling me her journey to a satisfying and fulfilling life. The main character's brutal honesty in the face of mortification made her very authentic and easy to root for. I will read more by this author.
I had high hopes for this book because the premise sounded funny and interesting. Unfortunately, it really wasn't. I'm not one who doesn't finish a book after I start it so I slogged through the whole thing. It was most tedious. I thought the main character Kerry was pretty pathetic. I just couldn't identify with her. Seriously, is there really women out there that are so self-demeaning, insecure, and helpless? Kerry behaved as if she had no control over her own life. Hate your job? Then quit for God's sake! I mean, just how much abuse will you take (especially from one certain coworker) before you decide enough is enough? And she was CONSTANTLY putting herself down over her weight, calling herself fat, ugly, whatever. Jeez! Enough already! Even her best girlfriends seem mean, judgmental, or idiotic. You only see one side of their characters, so you don't really care about them.

It's also hard to be sympathetic over her job troubles because she's a pretty crappy worker. She shows up at the office, and the first thing she does is make personal calls, check personal emails (while ignoring work related emails), then leaves the office to spend a couple of hours with another coworker having lattes at Starbucks. Who has that kind of job? Who can do that every day and NOT get fired?

And the drinking! She seems to drink to excess every day, sometimes during work at lunch. (Again, how can you NOT get fired?!?) And it's not just one or two drinks. It seems she's constantly getting either a little tipsy or even flat out drunk. Here's a piece of advice for you, Kerry...STOP DRINKING!

So, no. I didn't enjoy the book. Most of the time I wanted to reach into the book and smack the crap out of her. I don't like people who think that fate is against them and they're helpless to change anything when all of their problems result from their own bad decisions and/or choices. That is the way Kerry's character is written. I found it hard to even like her.

And one more thing...the ad campaign her company came up with. Turning little girls into adult crack whores and little boys into adult death row killers because they have dial up instead of high speed internet? Can you even imagine the firestorm and backlash if you actually aired those commercials? I can't even conceive of a client NOT firing their ad agency for even suggesting such a horrible ad campaign.

Bad characters. Bad plots. Bad scenarios. Bad book. I'm sorry I wasted the 5 hours of my life it took to read it.
At first I thought the journal was just the one with entries featured occasionally in the book. But I finally realized that Kerry, the main character, leads a life full of mortifying moments. And, if you're trying to relax so you can sleep, this wouldn't be the best choice of books, because about once per chapter the character manages to mangle something in her own endearing way. Before you know it, it's 2 a.m. and you're laughing at her another misadventure.
You won't regret losing sleep.
